I love warm soothing beverages. Maybe it is something about the northwest, all those wet gray days. Whatever the reason, a nice hot cup of coffee or tea seems to be just the pick me up I need when the weather is less than inviting. I also love it when my foods have awesome healing attributes! If you are ready to mix it up and ditch the plain old coffee tea routine the Turmeric Latte is a perfect go to! As a bonus it is naturally caffeine free, which means it can be enjoyed any time of day.
Why Drink a Turmeric Latte?
Beyond the pure enjoyment turmeric has long been looked to as a healing power house! Turmeric is loaded with curcuminoids, these are the compounds that are responsible for the medicinal properties of turmeric. Turmeric has long been used as a healing herb in Eastern cultures but there is also plenty of modern research to back up these claims. Turmeric is often praised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but let’s talk about a few of the specific health benefits of turmeric.
Cancer Fighting Agent
There have been many studies on the role of curcumin as an anti cancer agent, most notably it has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth. In a recent oncology study looking at breast cancer specifically, they found that curcumin not only inhibited tumor growth, it also triggered apoptosis, which is programmed cell death in, the breast cancer cells being studied.
Improve Your Gut Health
Several studies have shown that curcumin is effective in treating gut inflammation and gut permeability issues (i.e. leaky gut.) Furthermore they have also shown positive effects on the brain gut axis, which deals with the biochemical signaling between your gut and your brain.
Protect Your Heart
Curcumin has also been demonstrated to be a protective agent for your heart. A recent study published in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, which you can find here, found that curcumin may effectively protect against cardiac fibrosis, a type of scaring that occurs after injury to the heart.
Protect Your Liver
A recent March 2016 study found that a derivative of curcumin reduced liver fibrosis, which is a scaring of the liver. Liver Fibrosis is one of the major causes of death world wide. This study was based on previous research that had shown curcumin as a protective against against liver scaring.
Protect Your Nerves System
A recent study published in the Journal of Stroke Cerebrovascular Disease found that curcumin effectively protected neurons against inflammation, oxidative stress, and programmed cell death after injury.
Trim Your Waist Line
A January 2016 study published in Food & Nutrition Research suggests that Curcumin extract may even assist weight loss. The study found that curcumin suppressed the production of enzymes used in creating and storing fat while also promoting process that break down stored fat.Join me for a Turmeric Latte! caffeine free, good for your heart, brain, liver, & waistline Click To Tweet
Turmeric Latte Recipe Notes
After all of that are you ready to give the Turmeric Latte a try? For your Turmeric Latte I recommend using my Homemade Almond Milk Recipe. Homemade almond milk provides the best flavor and texture for your Turmeric Latte. However if you don’t have time to make your own almond milk you can also substitute your favorite store bought version.
One final note before we get into the recipe. One of the common issues with curcumin is the bioaviability, that is how much you are actually able to absorb and use. One way to increase the bioavilaibility of curcumin is to take black pepper with your turmeric, this is why black pepper will be added to your Turmeric Latte, but it also adds a nice spicy flavor.
